Star light, Star bright, I wish I may, I wish I might, make a wish, I wish tonight.
It was the beginning of a cold winter reaching minus twenty-five degrees outside, and it named as one of the coldest nights in Centerville, Canzic. As an airplane flew over the little town you could spot a little window where the lamp was turned on, that was Emma’s room.
In the middle of the night Emma stood by the window watching the wind fury down the road and through the trees. Emma was the type of girl that wasn’t scared of anything. She was the kind of girl that played every sport, and was known by everyone in the town. Something was bugging her that night, something was stopping her from sleeping but making her stay awake enough to want to cry. She cried and cried and cried trying to figure out what was wrong with her. Emma had no siblings, but one best friend; her neighbor. She depended on her best friend for everything, and whenever she needed advice that’s where she would go.
The twelve o’clock hand struck in the little city, and Emma fell from fright off the ledge of the window. “Ouchh, oh that’s gonna leave a bruise” she mumbled as she was getting up. “Emma sweetie, are you all right?” asked her mother. “Yeah, I’m fine mom” she yelled back. Emma gets up, makes her bed, and then sits on the edge staring out the window. As she’s begins to space off, she all of a sudden see’s this colorful little thing crash into the snow. Startled, Emma rushed to the window to see what it was. She stood on her tip toes, put her fingers on the window, and leaned forward to get better view, but nothing. She gently settles back down into her slippers and turns around to walk down stairs when she suddenly stops. She turns around, opens the closet, grabs her boots and runs quickly down the stairs jogging lightly towards the front door. She hops on one leg so she can tuck her pajama’s in her boots and opens the door. As she opened the door a strong wind blows snow in her face and she backs up and slams the door shut. She quickly pulls the curtains from the side window, and notices the snow was just as tall as she was almost six feet tall. She rushed quickly upstairs throwing her boots at the bottom of the staircase and shuts her room door quickly behind her. She then rushes across the room to her window, stops to check out if the window opens, and pushes the locks. Once she got the window open she starts shivering, but it doesn’t stop her curiosity what so ever. She leans slowly frontwards to check under her window when her right foot slipped, and she falls head first into the snow.
She wakes up, and she’s in the middle of a grass field. Rubbing her fingers against the bump on her head she has this puzzled expression on her face. “Where am I, what happened to me, am I dead?” she asked. She stood up, looked down and her nakid feet as she wiggled her toes, and spun in circles trying to figure out where she may be. She quickly catches a movement far away near a tree and quickly turns running towards it. She stops and looks up at the tree, but their’s nobody there. She takes another look around, and then sits under the tree with her head resting on her knees, and her fingers holding her hair. She notices that for the first time ever she has no water in her eyes. She then wipes her eyes to double check, but nothing. She pinches herself, but feels nothing. She is completely wiped of emotions.
“I don’t get it, am I dead or alive? I feel no feelings, I feel no pain I feel nothing. What happened to me, where am I? Will anyone help me? Is anyone there? Oh my god, I am dead. Man, I thought I had my entire life planned out; I was going to go to university in the big city, and meet a nice boy and fall in love. So much for those dreams.”
“Maybe I need this. I mean, after everything I’ve been through in the last year maybe I actually need to be heartless. You know, I wished for a whole bunch of things, and I remember wishing to not have a heart, but I never thought my wish would come true. I never wished to be lied to, but that came true. I never wished to be cheated on, but that came true. And I definitely do not remember wishing for my heart to ripped out and broken, but guess what, that came true too. I kind of like this new me, I guess I could try to live without emotions now, how hard could it be?”
She gets up, and suddenly feels a shadow sneaking over her. She looks up and her jaw drops, her hands slip beneath her and she falls right on her bum. “Ouchh, oh that’s gonna hurt!” She looks up having a hard time finding words to express what she sees. “Ye-you, you’re me,” she mumbles. Shocked, and left without words Emma is staring a ghost of herself. “This can not be happening right now” she says. She looks around, gets up trying to ignore that she’s lost her mind and walks away. “Where are you going?” Asked the ghost. Emma stopped, looked over her shoulder and continued to walk. “Hey, I’m talking to you!” said the ghost. “Yeah, well I don’t want to talk to you,” yelled Emma. Emma continued walking to where she woke up trying to figure out how to get back to reality. “Hey!” yelled Emma. “I told you we need to talk,” said the ghost. “I have nothing to talk to you about,” said Emma. The ghost had used it’s force to stop Emma from walking anymore. “What do you think you are doing, I mean don’t even answer that, what am I doing talking to a ghost?” She asked herself.
Emma suddenly fell to her knees on the grass and just stood there trying to cry. The ghost appeared to the right of her just starting at her without saying a word. “What do you want from me?” Asked Emma.
That’s when the ghost give Emma a small speech.
What do I want? Well, there is nothing I want since you are me. I’m here to help and guide you. Ah-before you interrupt me as usual just listen. I’ve been watching you cry yourself to sleep every night starting out that window wishing and wishing upon every star you can count, but you have to stop because you’re draining me. You need to learn that what you have done is what makes you who you are now, and that it’s only going to make you stronger by learning from your mistakes. So you’ve had your heart broken, big whoop. Think about this, so has a big portion of the female population. You really need to stop blaming yourself for everything and just take control of your life. Boys will come in and out of your life, but family and school will always be there to pick you back up. How does it feel not having emotions right now?
Emma left a little confused thinks of something to say back.
It feels great I guess! I mean, truthfully, I kind of like it like this because I feel like nothing that shouldn’t matter, matters. For the first time ever I don’t feel stressed about something stupid, or upset about something that was a mistake. I feel good about myself, I feel like this is how it’s always supposed to be. Can I ask you something, why do we have a heart anyway if everyone is better off without one? I mean, none of this is making sense to me right. I’m just frustrated, I’m sorry.
As she apologized the ghost started to fade away slowly. “Wait, what’s happening to me, I mean to you?” Asked Emma.
“I’m just you’re emotion. That’s what keeps me alive. The more you start to realize things and change who you are, the more I fade away. When you will fully mature and understand yourself, and what you need to change, that’s when I will no longer exist” said the ghost.
As Emma stood there putting the pieces together, she realized that none of this heart ache is really worth it, because nobody cares. As Emma stood there looking around her she thought of everything that had happened in her life, and soon enough the ghost was gone, but she could see all her thoughts in front of her like a roll of film was playing. Suddenly, the roll went blank with a heading: THE END. “No, no, no, no, no, nooooo” yelled Emma. “This can’t be the end of my life, I don’t want to die now” she cried out.
Everything goes black.
Few minutes later, Emma wakes up, and finds herself freezing. She immediately realizes she’s in the snow and gets up quickly. As she’s about to stand up she bumps heads with somebody. “Ouch! Man, that’s gonna leave another bruise” she said. Rubbing her head she stares into these green eyes, and then she looks down, and then up. “Do I know you?” She asks.
“I think you bumped your head pretty bad, let’s get you inside” the boy said. “Wait, wait, wait, you never told me who you are” exclaimed Emma. “My names Andrew, your boyfriend?”
“Oh, I didn’t know you were my boyfriend, are you sure?” She asked.
“Wow, you really hit your head badly. Emma do you not remember me at all?”
“No, I don’t. Frankly I don’t really care who you claim to be, but I know there are no guys in my life.”
“We really, really, really need to get you to a hospital Emma,” he said.
“No, no we don’t. I know who you are, I just don’t think you are part of my life anymore. To be honest, I don’t want you in my life anymore, so whether you agree or not, that is not up to you. So please, to be nice, we’re over. And we have been over for a while.”
With that being said, that was the end of her love life, and the beginning of her new life. She takes his hands off of her, and she takes big steps through the snow, and looks up at the sky when she reaches the shoveled side walk. I like this new me, I really do.
